GHEWAR & FIROZE

Ghewar & Firoze, sons of the late Padma Shri Sakar Khan, are masters of the kamaicha and the dholak respectively. Accomplished internationally touring musicians, and members of the Grammy Artist Pt. Vishwa Mohan Bhatt's Desert Slide Project, the brothers have a long history of performing at some of the most important stages across the world, including at Jodhpur's RIFF, Fez Festival in Morocco and more. They also featured on the album 'At Home: Sakar Khan' (2012, Amarrass Records - "5 Stars: Top of the World" - Songlines).
Ghewar has been playing the kamaicha since he was a small boy. A bowed, stringed lute, that was traditionally used to accompany vocals, the kamaicha in recent times has achieved its own virtuosic status. Today Ghewar is world renowned for his technical skill and emotional rendering of the vast repertoire of traditional folk music of the Manganiyar (Merasi) community. Firoze is a celebrated dholak player with a prolific performance career that spans three decades, including tours with the legendary Ustad Zakir Hussain and Ustad Sultan Khan. They are not only masters of their instruments, but bewstowed with powerful voices that complement each other. The brothers have received numerous honors and awards for their contributions to Indian folk music.

Notable performances:
Les Musicians du Desert in Geneva (1991), a BBC Symphony Orchestra performance organized by the Asian Music Circuit in the United Kingdom , “From Father to Son“ program conceived and hosted by Ravi Shankar and Yehudi Menuhin in 1995, the Sydney Music Festival held in Australia in 1997, the Festival of india with Theatre de la Soleil in Paris, Festival de Musique Del Mon in Spain 2001, the UCLA program “Mirabai Hindu Saint” in 2002, the Hong Kong Arts Festival in 2005 and many more. The brothers have also toured as members of the group 'Divana: Musician and poets of Rajasthan' to Turkey and Amsterdam India Festival in Holland in 2008.
"The great legacy of the legendary Sakar Khan ji is a heavy burden to carry, but the ease with which the notes flow from Ghewarji's kamaicha makes one thank the Gods of music for spreading the gift so generously amongst those closest to the great man. Ghewar & Firoze give us the raw beauty of Rajasthan's desert, the otherworldly romance of the tunes that colour that landscape with heart achingly poignant notes.” - Sarthak Kaushik, Ishq 104.6FM.
